Financial Aid

FAFSA, Financial Aid, and FSA ID: What You Need to Know

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the form students complete to apply for financial aid for college or career school. It helps determine how much money you can receive from the federal government, your state, and some colleges to help pay for tuition, books, housing, and other expenses.

Financial Aid can include:

  • Grants – free money you don’t have to pay back

  • Scholarships – awards based on achievements or other criteria

  • Work-Study – part-time jobs to help you earn money for school

  • Loans – borrowed money you must repay after graduation

Your FAFSA results help colleges decide what types and amounts of aid you qualify for. You can learn more about financial aid at Federal Student Aid’s official website.

FSA ID is your personal username and password used to log in to federal student aid websites and to sign your FAFSA electronically. Both the student and one parent (for dependent students) need their own FSA IDs.

Tips:
Complete your FAFSA as soon as it opens (usually in the fall) to maximize your chances for aid.
Most scholarship money comes from the college or university you end up going to.  Apply early as most university scholarships are awarded on a first come first serve basis.
